HyperText Transfer Protocol Secure (HTTPS) is a protocol that supports encryption of Internet traffic. The information to be transmitted under this protocol is protected by cryptographic SSL or TLS protocol. An SSL-secured Web site is displayed with https: // in the URL and is displayed in the Google Chrome Address bar with a green Padlock icon and “It’s Protected”.
Google Chrome marks sites without an SSL certificate as unprotected and with a grey “!” icon in the address bar.
In the future, the browser plans to change the security indicator (the icon) and become a red triangle for all non-SSL certified sites.

Difficulty switching to HTTPS
Despite the obvious benefits, many site owners may have a number of problems using SSL and switching to HTTPS:
- Price. SSL certificates can be free and paid. The price of paid certificates may vary. It all depends on the level of the certificate and on the number of domains for which the license was purchased. You can also use free certificates from a technical point of view, they do not differ from the paid ones and there is no evidence that Google ranked paid certificates better than free ones.
- Technical difficulties. When switching from HTTP to HTTPS, the URL of all pages on the site needs to be changed. Therefore, you need to configure not only redirects from one protocol to another, but also change the URLs of all pages of the site. Additional settings are also required in the Search Console.
- Site traffic may decrease. Initially, after switching to the new protocol, it is possible to see a drop in visits traffic to your site. This is mainly due to the processing of the https: // site by the search engines. Once the site with the new protocol is finally processed by Google, the positions will be restored and in the future, they should even grow.
For the reasons listed above, all sites will sooner or later migrate to HTTPS over time, so it’s better to fix this problem right now. Make sure to include an SSL certificate and an HTTPS protocol when you create your websites.
